Joining WJI 2030 Affirms PGI’s Commitment to Responsible Sourcing and Sustainability
(26th February, Hong Kong) – Platinum Guild International Hong Kong Limited (PGI) is pleased to announce it has become an Affiliate Member of the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030 (WJI 2030). A pioneering action platform headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and founded in 2022 by Kering and Cartier, and delegated by Richemont, WJI 2030 seeks to empower the change for a better path forward by harnessing multi-stakeholder collaboration to achieve measurable impact in the areas of climate resilience, preserving resources, and fostering inclusiveness.
“WJI 2030 unites all players across the watch and jewellery value chain and enables them to lead progress and future-proof their businesses in an ever-changing regulatory landscape. Their values are closely aligned with those of PGI and its retail and manufacturing partners, so our affiliation with them in the years ahead will be highly valuable,” says Tim Schlick, CEO of PGI.
“Responsibly sourced materials and sustainability are among the important factors consumers consider across the entire luxury category and the jewellery sector is no exception. In recent years, platinum has seen more advancements than in the past two decades, with PGI guiding the innovation in the platinum jewellery industry, collaborating with experts, designers, manufacturers and strategic retail partners. By embracing responsible sourcing practices and advanced technologies, brands will experience substantial value added to their brand story, reinforcing consumer trust and empowering informed decision-making,” he adds.
In January 2024, for instance, PGI worked with the US manufacturer Stuller to launch a Responsibly Mined Platinum casting grain in partnership with Anglo American and supplied in compliance with the Responsible Platinum/Palladium Guidance of London Platinum and Palladium Market (LPPM). Moving forward, PGI pledges to continue its role as a sustainability pioneer, working with industry partners to promote a more sustainable and responsible future.
Another example of PGI’s commitment to responsible platinum production is a signed “Declaration for Responsible and Sustainability Principles of China’s Platinum Jewellery Industry”. This was led by PGI and witnessed by NGTC and SAC/TC 256, and jointly signed by key industry stakeholders, including China Platinum Co., Ltd (CPC), Lukfook Group (International) Co., Ltd., China National Gem & Jewellery Imp. & Exp. Co., Ltd., Shanghai Laofengxiang Co., Ltd. and Beijing Caishikou Department Store Co., Ltd.
As a significant stakeholder in the global jewellery industry, PGI is eager to partner with a broader community across industries working with globally accepted standards, frameworks and regulatory expectations across climate, nature, human rights, gender, and equity themes. PGI joins over 70 other member companies of WJI 2030 from more than 18 countries, all committed to building climate resilience, preserving resources, and fostering inclusiveness.
